Food Producer The OSI Group Continues Its Global Expansion

In 1909 Otto Kolschowsky, a German immigrant, opened a meat market in Oak Park, Illinois known for providing the best cuts of meats. In 1917, he moved into the wholesale meat business. Then in 1955, the meat market began providing beef patties for a new fast food chain called McDonald’s. Today, the company Otto Kolschowsky founded is called the OSI Group and it has grown from being a local meat market into an international food producer with more than 75 production facilities in over 17 countries around the world. The onetime meat market is now one of the top 100 companies in the United States.

Quality products, efficient service and environmentally sound production methods have long been the hallmarks of the OSI Group. That has led to the company becoming a world leader when it comes to food product production and distribution. The company has won many awards for environmentally sound food production practices. Its most recent is the 2016 Globe of Honor given to the OSI Group by the British Safety Council. Company CEO Sheldon Lavin has shown a commitment to making sure the OSI Group’s actions do not hurt the environment and the company gives generously to charitable causes to improve the quality of life for people in the countries where they do business.

Expansion continues to be a focus of the OSI Group. The company has made major inroads in China, India and several other Asian countries. They also have a growing customer base in Australia and South and Central America. Europe is also a serious target for the company’s expansion. To facilitate that expansion the OSI Group has purchased two companies that provides food products to more than a dozen European countries. Those companies are Flagship Europe and Baho Foods. The company also recently purchased a former Tyson Foods production plant in Chicago to increase their U.S. food production capabilities.

The OSI Group started with Otto Kolschowsky and his family. Today the Aurora, Illinois based company has more than 20,000 workers worldwide. CEO Sheldon Lavin deserves a great deal of credit for the company’s continued growth and success. He has proven to be a visionary leader with a deep understanding of the global food industry. Since the 1980s when he took over the company, the OSI Group has been wildly successful. They have expanded into many new markets and now have over $6 billion in assets.
